Man's Best Friend (besides the dog and pizza)

It's been quite some time since this section was updated, so I thought I would write up something small. Now I'm not exactly sure off hand what to write about, so I'll wing it a bit.
I've never much been a big fan of TV. Granted I watch it now and then, and it is on usually 10-12 hours a day, but that is only because I have a really bad habit of needing noise around the house. I hate quietness. And since winter is about, and I am home 5 out of 7 days (I'm a carpenter), I just have to have some sort of noise. Now I could always turn the radio on, but that means I have to listen to the same 10 songs over and over again, day after day. After a week or two they will retire one, and add another, don't you just hate that? There are always CD's, but I have heard them all many times, so that leaves the good ol' TV. Man's best friend, after the dog and pizza of course! It's noise, and it is seldom the same thing, over and over . . unless it's MTV. But we won't get in to that. So what's my point? Well, the TV really has a lot to offer. I don't mean Brittany Spears, or Josh Hartnett for all you girls, but it has a lot to offer in the way of idea's.
In order for a show, series, or movie to do well, it has to have solid plots, as well as acting. Plots, that is the key-word here. What campaign runs long without a plot? Or even possibly worse, where do they go with a bad plot? No where. Plots are important, and when it comes to series & movie writers, as well as directors, few people know more on how to capture their audience. It is their daily job, so they better be good at it.
I was flipping through channels a bit last night and seen the previews for Veritas: The Quest. It looked fairly interesting so I figured I would keep it there while I finished up writing an NPC for my campaign Saturday night. Needless to say the character never got much past the attribute figuring stage. This show is actually very interesting, and has a pretty cool plot going for it. A group of people who travel the world in search of answers for mysteries, miracles, and more, before the government can. These include ancient relics, hidden tombs, and religious icons to name just a few. But more than just that, the leader of the group, and his son are really interested in figuring out what exactly happened to their wife / mother, who vanished in an ancient tomb... all while the mysterious Brotherhood trails close on their heels.
In last night's episode they headed off to Antarctica, where a source of great power was recorded to be hidden under layers of glacial ice. Sure enough there it was, a source so powerful it healed a badly wounded member, and heated up the small cavern to livable conditions. This "small" pyramid was made in layers, one on top of another, the weird thing was there was a gap between each layer. They figured out that it actually worked as a magnet forcing each layer away from the other, such as when you try bring the same end of two magnets together. After a few moments the government showed up and got in the way, disrupting the power, and causing the whole area to start collapsing. Obviously they got away safely, but not before filming what was going on as they flew over. The whole area collapsed, so show a huge pyramid, like those in Egypt, standing in one of the coldest section of Antarctica.
OK, so you really did not need an episode recap, but just think of the things that could be generated from this. For starters it gave a great look at what Antarctica would look like, and the harshness that is there. What DM would not love to throw their players into such an atmosphere? How about an Egyptian pyramid hidden under hundreds of feet of ice? How did it get there? Why is it there? Was Antarctica really a desert at one point? Granted the area your using may not be Antarctica, but you get the idea.
In anycase it looks to be a pretty interesting show they I will defiantly be drawing a bit from. To build this a bit I figured I would write up a short list of 10 television series that have some interesting, helpful, or fun plots and ideas to help nearly any GM. You may have to lookup what channel / network they are on in your area, but most people with cable / satellite should have access to them. Feel free to comment and add some of your own! Next week we will peer into the movie scene a bit.
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Sarah Michelle Gellar, vampires, and demons? What more could you ask for?)
- Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (Cheesy yes, but it's Hercules.)
- Xena: Warrior Princess (See above, can't have one without the other.)
- Veritas: The Quest (See the entire above . . )
- Adventure Inc (More modern, but has a few idea's.)
- Mutant X (Great for any super hero game.)
- Charmed (Wizards, warlocks, witches, and shamans!)
- Dark Angel (All sorts of goodies here.)
- The X-Files (One of the biggest and most popular shows there was . . and still is.)
- The Dead Zone (Based off of Stephen King, can't go wrong.)
Obviously there are many, many more, and I could site here for the next 20 minutes naming them, but I'll let everybody else offer their own first.

Television series (I don't have cable):
1. Alias - This one has Spycraft and d20Modern written all over it.
2. Stargate SG-1 - This has been one of the choices for Mongoose's secret project.
3. Tracker (starring Adrian Paul) - I'm not sure if this one is still going but it has some good potential.
4. Babylon 5 - Great series full of solid plotlines and idea that apply to nearly any game system and isn't necessary restricted to science fiction if you look at plots and not the setting itself.
Motion Pictures:
1. Independence Day - Dragonstar anyone? This also works for other d20 sci-fi type settings.
2. The Void (stars Adrian Paul and Amanda Tapping) - Definitely a d20Modern or Spycraft story just waiting to be run.
3. The Mummy (and its sequels) - Pulp d20 at its finest.
4. Any James Bond film - Again, d20Modern or Spycraft is perfect.

And to think I even ran a quick spell check . . . dog must have changed it on me! Maybe their not mans best friend after all! Alias is really good, as is SG-1. But I had to limit myself to ten. Actually pretty much every show on the sci-fi channel, if you can get past some of the horrid acting, is pretty decent.
