Save d20zines
I see on the front page that Steve is asking for donations to help keep d20 Magazine Rack going. I have no problem sending cash to help, but I was wondering what people thought of creating a product to sell on RPGNow and the proceeds would go to keep this site running? I know we have some talented people here, since I see it in your reviews everyday. What does everyone think?
Re:Save d20zines
Along the theme of Locations/adventures/monsters, what about a book about Lairs? Take a new or existing creature and build it’s lair. You could use any creature from a dragon, a ghost, or possibly a thieves guild, map out it’s lair, give a room by room description and a generic background that could fit in any world. This way it would not be a full adventure but something you could plug into your world where needed. Each lair would only have to be a couple of pages long and the pdf we put out, would hold a couple of lairs. This might help worldbuilders or DMs could use one and flesh it out into a full adventure. Just a thought...
Re:Save d20zines
Excellent idea. We will need someone to do the cartography, however. I have some difficulty making attractive maps. Mine are functional, but not much else. And maybe an illustration or two, if we have a decent artist.
All in agreeance, say "aye."
Re:Save d20zines
"Aye"
I could take a stab at the maps. Examples of my work are on the Cartographer's Guild section of these boards. I would just need a general sketch to work off of.
Re:Save d20zines
AYE AYE Captain!
Fabulous idea on the Lair's!
I've been "intending" to do up several locations for a thieve's guild on my own (LARGE hotel, stand-alone tower, cavern/dungeon complex....obviously a successful guild! ;)
I have done a few overland maps in CC2, my "next" learning experience is underground/building maps. I'll post something to see if it qualifies as "attractive" (probably not, but I need the critique either way).
Re:Save d20zines
I going to go out on a limb here and say that since we are the only three who have responded to this idea, it's a done deal. I can provide a very basic map in CC2 to accompany my submissions, and if either of you wants to clean it up and make it look nice, feel free. Ideally, the book should have between five and ten small lairs, I should think (or maybe just three big ones). If we could each manage two or three, we should be okay. What do you guys think?
Also, any thoughts on what kinds of lairs you might like to do? Speaking for myself, I'd like to tackle any of the following:
Dragon
Minotaur
Ghost
Vampire
Ogre
Ettin
Medusa
(Mind-Flayer would be loads of fun, but they aren't OGL)
And hey! Don't let us usurp all the fun! If you want to join the project, speak up!
Re: Save d20zines
I'm all for it, and it's a great idea for the long run, but in the short term, we need any donations you can spare! If you enjoy the work that we put into this site, then please open your hearts and wallets. My own donation is going out in just a few moments.

Re:Save d20zines
Thanks guys! Normally, funding isn't a problem. However, we got hit with a really large and unexpected bill that has literally tapped everything I have and then some. So anything you can give to help out will be greatly appreciated.
In fact, feel free to spread to word to others about the need. The more people know, the better chance we will have at getting the amount needed.
Re:Save d20zines
how much is due? in other words, i would like to donate but i want to know the numbers? if not, please provide a best donate amount...
thanks
Re:Save d20zines
The needs for this site are no where near those like the 16k raised for EN World recently. Ideally, if only $1000 could be raised, it would go a long way towards stabilizing funds for the next few months. To date, $90 has been donated.
The long term goal for the site would be donations of only $50 per month on a continual basis. This would be sufficient to maintain the site at its current needs along with what I typically supplement the costs with.
Re:Save d20zines
Adventures can be a real mother bear though, because they really should be tested by at least two indifferent DMs to be certain all the kinks are out of them. Locations are a little easier, but they still have to be generic enough to fit into your campaign or mine without major modification.
Re:Save d20zines
i'll see what i can do. but money is a little tight this month...
Re:Save d20zines
I'd really like to see "Location" or "Adventures", but then again, you can generally only sell 1 copy per DM (often just 1-2 per group, right?). A player-oriented product has more potential it would seem.
It needs to be something relatively small, so it doesn't get bogged down in development & never released.
Trying to narrow competition would be good as well (tons of Feat, Prestige class, & Monster books are out already. 3/3.5E lacks many adventures, but Wizards puts out free stuff on their web site. Same with "Locations". Also Dungeon Mag covers this territory as well).
Well balanced Magic items with full histories & backstories are not often done....but how easy are those things to adapt to a broad market? It should at least shoot for "standard" campaign settings.
Like I said above, as a DM, what I need is well done "Locations" & "Adventures" that are easy to wedge into my ongoing campaign.
Re:Save d20zines
To keep this idea going, I was interested in what product should we be looking at to create?
Monsters
Magic Items
Adventure
Random Locations
Book on a culture (for example; we agree we want to create a tribe of dragonriders. We would build their history, prestige classes, new dragon type, new magic and weapons, etc.)
Or any other thoughts.
Re:Save d20zines
In the short, books of monsters and books of spells tend to be pretty well-received, though if we did monsters, it might be cool to select a theme (such as potential PC races, all undead, or a book of dragons).
In the long-term, I would love to be a part of a world creation project.
Re:Save d20zines
Good choices.
Here are a few monsters I might be interested in doing...
Annis
Chimera
Griffon
Hippogriff
Spectre
Water Naga
Wight
The Griffon or Hippogriff I thought might interest players who are looking for special mounts.
I also want to add, I am learning to use Indesign at work and will volunteer to layout the pdf, unless someone else actually has experience with page layout.
