Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures: Icons Gargantuan Blue Dragon Review
By Steven Creech, Exec. Chairman
Initiative Round
Gargantuan Blue Dragon is the third release in the Dungeons &Dragons Icons line for the D&D Miniature Game. Manufactured by Wizards of the Coast, this 8 ½” long miniature carries a $39.99 retail price. In addition to the miniature, this product comes with a full color battle map (designed by Jason Engle), skirmish rules and a scenario.
The stat card is oversized. One side contains the dragon’s RPG game stats (CR 25, 39 HD, +49 bite, +47 claws, wings and tail) showing why dragons are feared so much while the flip side has the game mechanics for the miniature game. The dragon has 600 hit points and begins with 6 activations per round. Its breath weapon does 60 electricity damage with a DC 29 to save. It can also move through a smaller enemy’s space to deal 45 crushing damage and Stun (DC 29 save). Its point cost is 500,making it suitable as a standalone opponent in a 500 pt. warband.
Critical Hit
For starters, the dragon is a piece of work. Truly menacing in appearance and crouching down, as though he is about to pounce on the unfortunate adventurers. The map is beautiful in illustrating how a dragon’s lair would likely look like.
Critical Fumble
Enough with the twisty ties and packing tape! Unpackaging this mini requires equal parts patience along with a good blade or pair of wire cutters. More scenario options would have been nice to have.
Coup de Grace
The Gargantuan Blue Dragon bears a high price tag unless you play the D&D minis game. If you do, then it’s a “must have” mini. For anyone else, the justification is of a much more personal nature when you weigh price versus need.
Final Grade: A
