Hi, I'm John Grigsby, one of our friendly Staff Reviewers here at d20 Magazine Rack and Ghostwind has invited me to fill in on this column for a little while to give you some of my thoughts on the GM's Perspective. So, with the introductions out of the way, let's get on with it, shall we? I'll try not to bore you too much.

Not Tonight, Guys, I Have Headache
Let's face facts; it happens to the best of us. Some nights, you just don't feel like running a game. Maybe your parents or teachers have been on your case, or maybe you're feuding with your significant other, or maybe you just need a break! If you try to design or run an adventure under these conditions, the chances are it's not going to be fun or enjoyable for anyone involved. Characters are liable to end up unfairly dead or punished, and feelings will be hurt. So how can you prevent this from happening?

In this instance, the best solution for all involved is to postpone the game for a time when you're feeling better. Yes, your players are likely to gripe a little, but they're likely to take the news that you just aren't up to it tonight a whole lot better than watching their characters get massacred in a hideously unbalanced encounter just so you can get it over with. Call them and tell them that you just aren't up to a game tonight. If you are honest and up-front with them, they'll likely understand. Meanwhile, you take a night off and wind down, make up, or do whatever it is you need to do.

Now suppose that you just couldn't get the adventure finished in time. It's been a rough week and you'd still like to get together, but you just aren't ready to continue the foray into the Pit of Doom this weekend. Or it might happen that one or two of your members can't make it tonight. As the GM, you know that for them to proceed without Kevlar^&tm; the fighter will spell certain doom, but he has to work overtime and just can't be there. In this case, you could just cancel and reschedule, but it seems a shame to do so when everybody else can make it.

Here are some suggestions on what you can do as a group instead of role-playing, should the need arise (or even if you just want to take a night off from the game):

Game Night
Why not play some traditional games instead of RPGs that evening? Many board games and card games can be enjoyed by as many as six players and few groups have more than that number. My group has found the German import Settlers of Catan (produced in the US by Mayfair Games) to be extremely enjoyable, and we've whiled away many an hour playing Steve Jackson's Munchkin (and Space Munchkin) card games. Even something like Monopoly or Risk can appeal to the more power-hungry players in your group. Steve Jackson's Illuminati is another game that my group finds good for satisfying the yearnings of power, as well.

Steering away from the RPG theme, games like Trivial Pursuit or Jenga often appeal to everyone. If you've got an ordinary deck of cards and some matches or toothpicks (or even bloodstones), why not play a few friendly hands of poker? Scattergories (from Milton Bradley) is one of our favorite games, and even my old Life game gets the occasional work-out.

Movie Night
Another option is to pile in the car (or a couple of cars) and run down to the local Blockbuster video. Most people have at least a VCR and DVD is becoming more and more popular these days. Pick out a movie or two that everyone can agree on (or take a vote and let majority rule), rent it, pop some corn, and sit back and enjoy the show! When getting movie as a group, try to keep an open mind. Even if you generally don't watch science-fiction films, if everybody else wants to see one, give it a try, you might like it! Of course, the next time movie night comes up, they should be equally willing to try your suggestion.

Some movies can inspire some great gaming adventures or even some fine conversation. What gamer hasn't, for example, tried to figure out Wesley's (from The Princess Bride) stats? It can be fun to discuss these things as a group, and you could even set aside a little time after the film to sit and discuss it. The discussion could be as serious or as silly as you wish. I recall the philosophical discussion my group got into the other night after watching Cube 2: Hypercube. It was pretty intense (good movie, by the way).

The Fine Art of Heckling
As many great movies as there are out there, there are an equally large number of bad movies, but a bad movie doesn't have to be reduced to bargain bins and the back corner of the video rental place. One thing our group enjoys doing is renting a particularly bad film and then heckling it; the way they used to do on Mystery Science Theater 3000. This can actually be a lot of fun, especially if everyone gets into the act. Just be sure not to let the less-shy members of your group dominate the action. Everyone should have the chance to toss their comments in there!

PS2 Tournament
I say PlayStation 2 only because that happens to be what I own, but it works equally well with any console system. If your group is small and the game permits up to four players, plug it in and have some fun! If you have a larger group (or the game doesn't support more than two players), you'll need to take turns, competition-style (John versus Steve, then Brad versus Bruce, and the winners of each face-off for the finale). Those not currently participating can cheer or heckle the participants.

Co-GMing
One group I used to game with had three GMs. This GM council, if you will, met on a weekly basis to discuss how major events in the world would unfold and to determine what new releases (if any) or house rules would be added to the campaign. Each GM ran their adventures in turn. When a GM was not running a game, they were considered a player. When a GM was running a game, his characters could make cameo appearances, but only earned 1/10 the normal experience for the adventure and could not accept permanent magical items (only temporaries like potions and scrolls).

The council also established what monsters and treasures could not be introduced into the game and what NPCs could not be altered. Certain particularly powerful items (like vorpal swords or artifacts) were restricted without special permission from the other two GMs (so that they could prepare for the inclusion of these things). The other two GMs could also vote to exclude such things if they felt that it was too powerful.

Each player had a stable of three characters that they could switch between adventures or when the character they were running died (at it was recommended that you didn't let any one character get too far ahead of the others). Rules for character creation, and what sources could be drawn from were decided by the GM council and applied equally to all participants. If a character was killed, a new one was generated one level below the lowest level of the two remaining characters, and added to the stable (after approval of the council).

A similar system could be arranged for your group, where even if a person misses a night or if you don't have the next adventure ready, an alternate GM can take over and let you participate as a player that evening. This gives you a break from having to GM all the time, let's you have extra time to prepare adventures, and takes a little of the burden off of your shoulders. Besides, sometimes you can learn a lot from watching someone else's GM style.

This is good advice to any group. I have DM'd for more than fifteen years and never played - I have certainly felt the burnout from time to time, although more often than not (because DM-ing was almost always a pleasure and never a chore) it was a lack of time to prepare before games that would delay my game nights.

I am curious to know more about the DM council - did their PCs not fall behind the rest of the group if they only earned a 1/10 EP's for entire sessions?
