Icons and Commands: Varicolor, Part Two

By Matthew Lynn

Good morning, mappers! My name is Matthew Lynn, and this is yet another column written by me. This series is  intended to reduce the learning curve for mapping with Campaign Cartographer 2. This particular column is going to cover the varicolor feature for CC2 symbols. In particular, this second part will cover the method of creating a varicolor symbol.

What will you need for this tutorial?

Icons & Commands

(in order as they appear in the text)

First,Campaign Cartographer 2 from Profantasy, Inc (sorry, if you have Campaign Mapper, some of these features will require an upgrade to CC2). Then, install Universal Update 4. How do you get UU4? Register!

Now, enough of my chatter. If you did my Symbol Creation tutorial, you should have a copy of the Wizards Lab.fsc symbol catalog. If you didn't do that tutorial, go and do it! Or you can download the catalog here.

Got it open yet? Hope so, because you can't start until you do! Go ahead and make sure it is open now.

Command Summary
NA SYMINFO Opens the Symbol Settings dialogue.
In Part I we discussed at a basic level the difference between Varicolor & SuperVariColor symbols. You were even shown how to make a varicolor symbol. And you're probably thinking to yourself, "But you told me how to make SVC symbols as well!" That's not entirely correct, there's a few more steps to go before you master that!

OK, when working with an SVC symbol, there are two more things to remember. The first, you don't need to use CHGCB at all. All entities that you want to be drawn as the current color must be placed on a VARICOLOR+0 (or just VARICOLOR) layer. I prefer VARICOLOR+0 because it reminds of what it is for.:)

When you are done placing all the entities onto the appropriate VARICOLOR layers, you must then finish drawing, or defining the symbol. See my Symbol Creation tutorial for an explanation on how to do this. Though you really should have read it already!:)

OK, open up the Symbol Manager dialogue. Don't know how? Go read the other tutorials!:) Select the symbol you want to make into an SVC symbol. Click on Edit, and place your window. Then, down at the command prompt, type the command SYMINFO. A new dialogue box will open up. See Image 1! Isn't cool how Profantasy has so many neat little tools?

Image 1.

OK, you can see two basic areas. The one we want is the bottom one, General Options. Click on the Varicolor Symbol box, and hit OK. You have now told CC2 Pro that you have made an SVC symbol. If you don't do this, your SVC symbol won't work properly.

We'll discuss the other settings in this dialogue in a feature tutorial.

Now save your catalog and begin mapping! Please, while you're mapping, feel free to stop by the Mysaniti Cartographer's Guild and subscribe to the Guild! Or just visit the Previews page!
