Dragonlance: The Crown and the Sword (Rise of Solamnia, Book II) Review
By Ian Strelec, Staff Reviewer
Initiative Round
The Crown and the Sword, written by Douglas Niles, is book II in the Rise of Solamnia series, set in the world of Dragonlance by Wizards of the Coast. It takes place, by my best guess, following the events of the War of Souls. Well, what’s the War of Souls, you ask? Unfortunately, as the book doesn’t really explain and I haven’t read those books, I have no idea. I do know it involves someone named Mina, who apparently was involved to the point of having been mostly in charge. I do know a little about her, but it doesn’t exactly apply here.

"Eilistraee is the only deity to offer the drow any hope. With Lolth missing and her priestesses unable to mount a defense, the cities of the Underdark are going to fall, one by one. Soon hundreds - if not thousands or even tens of thousands - of drow will come streaming out of the Underdark, looking for refuge. Elistraee's priestesses will offer it to them. They'll help guide our people up into the light. They'll teach the drow to take their rightful place in the world - to not just survive up here, but thrive. We'll be able to reclaim our birthright. We're creating a new home on the World Above, one in which the drow can live in harmony with one another. What more noble cause can their possibly be than that?"

These words, spoken with the raw passion and blind confidence which underlie all such statements made by the overzealous religious convert, betray both the false hope and desperate actions of the characters in Extinction, the fourth volume in R. A. Salvatore's "War of the Spider Queen" series, published by Wizards of the Coast.

Thieves of Blood is Book One of the "Blade of the Flame" series by Tim Waggoner and published by Wizards of the Coast. The story follows two main characters - Diran Bastiaan, assassin-turned-priest of the Silver Flame, and Ghaji, his hulking half-orc companion and bodyguard. Diran was once a member of a secret assassin's cult that recruited its members by kidnapping young children and initiating them into the training. At the ceremony where he was inducted into the guild officially, a dark spirit was bonded to his soul to make him faster, smarter, stronger, and absolutely cold-hearted; that is, the perfect assassin.

Marked for Death is the first book in The Lost Mark series by Matt Forbeck and is published by Wizards of the Coast. The story follows two friends, a human warrior and a shifter hunter, veterans of the war that spent 100 years tearing their world apart and has finally calmed down. Kandler, the human warrior, was married to an elven woman killed in the cataclysm that created the Mournlands, a vast swath of territory covered in fog so thick you can't see the hand in front of your face, and everything inside is utterly dead, though nothing decays. Burch is his shifter friend from the days of the war.
